Key West- Part One

Hello, hello, hello everyone! Reporting here from sunny[ish] Key West, Florida!!

Key West | Beautiful Disasters

My mom and I flew in here from blustery Chicago on Monday and are staying here till Friday. This is actually my third time in Key West, and I have to admit, I absolutely adore this quirky place.

Key West | Beautiful Disasters

It is full of a lot of crazy, usually drunk, strange people, but they make great entertainment for people-watching. Also, if you ever intend on going to Key West, you absolutely MUST go to Mallory Square one night. For one, Mallory Square has one the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. Be sure you get there earlyish (like 10-15 minutes early) so you can get a nice viewing spot. Another fun thing with Mallory Square is that there is some quite unique entertainment there in the evenings. Street performers come and do their little stunts. They are a lot of talk trying to guilt you into giving them money and what not, but they’re certainly entertaining. My personal favorite one is the two guys in red pants who do a bunch of stunts, with juggling and gymnastics and end with a pretty cool finale on a ladder. Lastly, there is some fun art that vendors and local artists sell, like different types of jewelry, paintings, sculptures, and little tchotchkes. You really can’t go wrong with any of the food down here.

Bo's Fish Wagon Conch Fritters

Bo’s Fish Wagon Conch Fritters

Being from Chicago, where seafood is pretty darn expensive and good seafood is hard to come by, my mom and I certainly take advantage of all the seafood we can get our hands on.

Bo's Fish Wagon Grilled Mahi with Coleslaw

On Monday night, we went to Bo’s Fish Fish Wagon. My mom ordered what they’re famous for, a fried grouper sandwich. I ordered grilled mahi with coleslaw and key limeade (yum!!), and then we split they’re famous conch fritters. We loved everything! It was super casual, delicious, and a great welcome meal to Key West.

Tuesday night we went to Alonzo’s Oyster Bar. I ordered the blackened grouper, which came with red potatoes and veggies. Dee-lish!! I love grouper, and it is what is local and known around here, so it was perfect for me. You can tell my  mom and I are related…she ordered the grilled grouper, same sides. Hers was delicious, as well! Sorry, didn’t get a chance to snap pictures, but I can assure you, it was fabulous!

More to come later :-)

Random Fact of the Day: Watermelons can cost up to $100 in Japan!

White-Wheat Batter Bread

So where did March come from? Like I could have sworn I was just making Christmas cookies and drinking hot cocoa.

I know February always has less days, but it seriously FLEW by this year! I have to admit, as much as I am looking forward to the warm, sunny days of summer, I am kind of scared for high school to finish.  My last season of high school soccer officially starts this week and it is so bittersweet.

I know there is so much to look forward to with college and what not but the unknown is still pretty freaky to me.

White-Wheat Batter Bread | Beautiful Disasters

Womp womp wooomp. Sorry for such a Monday-moody post, here’s some super easy sandwich bread that you you don’t need to knead. (heh..”need to knead”) It’s tasty, and has soft insides with a real crusty crust. You know, as opposed to those non-crusty crusts.

White-Wheat Batter Bread

(Makes 1 loaf)

1 package dry yeast

1 1/2 cups warm milk (I used skim)

3 Tablespoons butter, room temperature

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 Tablespoon white sugar

1 cup whole wheat flour

2 cups all-purpose flour

  1. Combine warmed milk and butter in a large bowl. Sprinkle the dry yeast over the mixture and stir, let sit for a minute or so. Add the salt, sugar, and 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour. Using a wooden spoon, stir vigorously for about 2 minutes, this will be a good arm workout! If you prefer, you may use the stand mixer and mix with the paddle attachment for about 1 minute, instead.
  2. Add the remaining 1 cup of all-purpose flour and beat well. Pour the batter into a greased 4-inch by 9-inch loaf pan. Wet your fingers and smooth the top of the bread batter.  With a sharp knife, make a couple slashes along the bread. Cover lightly with a towel and let rise to the top of the loaf pan, about 35 minutes.
  3. Bake bread 375˚F oven for about 45 minutes. At about the 25 minute mark, I covered the top of my bread with a small piece of foil to prevent the top of the bread from getting any browner. After baking for 45 minutes, let the bread cool for about 5-10 minutes, then turn bread onto rack and finish cooling. Enjoy!

Random Fact of the Day: It was illegal to sell E.T. dolls in France because there is a law against selling dolls without human faces.

LA Round 2

So I left off on Monday with the Disneyland goodies, so here’s some more from Disney that I didn’t put up for you to feast your little eyes!

Close-up of the adorable Mickey Mouse chocolate dipped pretzels!

We stopped in the Candy Palace to look at all these treats! If you’re ever in Disneyland, you have got to stop in this little shop even just to look around. But…you’ll most likely be tempted to pick up one of the yummies inside.

These cookies are so big, they look like scoops of ice cream!

The cookies…I just have no words.

The candy apples were just too awesome. The somehow manage to make EVERYTHING Mickey-themed!!!

Even the lollipop stand looked pretty. oh gosh…I’m a total food blogger.

Chocolate Turtles in the shape of Mickey, how is that even possible!?!

Okay break from food here for a second, how about a couple beach shots? ;) Hopefully you all aren’t too jealous, heck I know some of you probably have the beach all year right by you!

We finally got to the beach Monday and headed out to a second one yesterday.

Here are some shots of all the yummy treats and funny little things they were selling in the Manhattan Beach Creamery.

The cookies were just too cute, I used to always get ones like these at a bakery by our house in the shapes of smiley faces.

Pretty macaroons, mini tarts and parfaits!

Cupcake bandages, uh hello? How come I have not heard of these and don’t have a lifetime supply?!

Abe Lincoln bandages, I gotta love these as a Illinoisan.

A drink flavored like peanut butter and jelly? Eh… not sure how I feel about that one.

Breakfast floss…Hm, I wonder if my dentist would approve of this? Fun fact: my uncle is my dentist!

Chocolate boyfriend. Okay, now I could get on board with this one!

I split a cookie ice cream sandwich dipped in dark chocolate with my mom. Oh my gosh…so GOOD. If you are ever around here you have got to try it! The cookies they use are just absolutely perfect for the ice cream sandwich. The cookies are so chewy and yummy!

The one we went to yesterday, we got to rent these super cute old fashioned bikes with the high handlebars. I’ve always wanted to ride one of those, so that was pretty fun! It’s funny to see how different peoples’ personalities are here, everyone is SO friendly!! However, the traffic is crazy and driving around is like being on a roller coaster. But overall, I love it here in L.A. It’s gonna be so, so hard to leave!

That’s it for now! Again, sorry for no recipe :( Things will be back to normal around here soon enough!

Week in Review (6/4-6/8)

Summer has finally arrived!!!! :D

Monday I shared with you guys some Fully Loaded Cookies that I made to get me through finals week ;)

Tuesday I had my last two finals!!! Physics was a rough one but at least it is finally over.

Wednesday I posted some good ‘ol classic Fudgy Brownies. This has to be y absolute favorite brownie recipe I have tried so far, deeelish!

Friday I showed you all the Angel Food Cake I made. I have always been a bit reluctant to make angel food cake at home because of the whole 12 egg white thing and all the sifting and folding nonsense, but it is truly worth EVERY SECOND. And it really is not that difficult to make. Plus I think angel food cake sounds kinda impressive, so just make it :) It’s friendly to the waist-line!

And then today I had the ACT, hopefully my last one. So now that the test is over, Summer has officially begun!!
